On April 21, the United Nations projected that because of Covid-19, the number of people facing severe food insecurity worldwide could double to 265 million (csis.org). It’s hard to comprehend the lived experiences of the millions of people behind this statistic. How are people really going to combat food insecurity world-wide, nationally, and locally? Here in Ventura County, Interface’s 211 Informational Services provides a link to weekly schedules of pop-up pantries with the times, locations, and addresses provided. However, our services are more than providing basic needs. We are here to listen to concerns and check up on those in need. If you are someone you know is struggling with food insecurity, please visit 211ventura.org for more information on county-wide services and resources. #FacesofCOVID19 #StoryofRecovery
Interface has helped families get connected to local food pantry services and other basic resources, helping them to stay at home and minimizing their risk of COVID 19 exposure. #facesofcovid19 #storyofresilience
May is Mental Health Month. IF you know someone who is, or may be, experiencing domestic violence, it can increase what may already be a stressful time for you. Here are some tips on how to help a friend.
"This is the first time in my time practicing that I can recall a client, no less, a young adult, calling me at 8:30am to setup therapy, only one day after he was referred by his Case Manager. No time wasted. A testament of his willpower and priorities. In my opinion, saying ‘yes’ and beginning therapy during COVID-19, is a huge sign of courage because most of us, naturally, are clinging to what is familiar while this young man is stepping into the unknown, and our service may bring him closer to who he longs to be.” - Interface Reentry Therapist

"Due to the stay at home order, I’ve been unable to attend my therapy sessions, which have been a crucial part of helping me overcome my victimization. I did not have a reliable cell phone to continue my sessions remotely, but with assistance, I was able to secure a pre-paid phone, which has allowed me to continue my therapy. This phone has been a lifeline for me during these times." #FacesofCOVID19 #StoryofRecovery
"When I reach out, parents have expressed how grateful they are feeling during this time - for their family, for the time they are able to spend with them, and the support of @f5vcneighborhoodsforlearning teachers and staff. I have gotten a few pictures of children from our class doing activities or on our FB live and Zoom classes at home, and they tell me that they really miss being in the classroom and can’t wait to be back. I keep reminding them that I miss being in the classroom with them and am here for anything they may need, even if it is to talk about a challenging situation they are experiencing." - NfL West County Teacher

"It’s hard to be in this place… not knowing if I will be able to provide for my sibling and myself. I’ve had my hours reduced at both of my jobs which is making it hard to cover expenses. I don’t know what I’m going to do now to take care of us, but I know I have to figure it out. I don’t have another option."

"As a therapist, I am witnessing people begin to acknowledge the anger that they have right now. In some cases, I see people even learning how to express that anger in healthy ways. So many people are looking at the ways they care for themselves and are realizing that what they are doing is not enough to cope with the reality of COVID-19. For many, people counseling sessions through video chat is helping them to acknowledge feelings of anger, sadness, and anxiety. For others, mindfulness techniques are being used. Yet so many people are still having a hard time. Even so, everyday folks wake up and face this new reality. The reality of COVID 19. So many people trying to deal with uncomfortable feelings and thoughts, emotions felt in the mind and felt in the body." #FacesofCOVID19 #StoryofRecovery

"I was able to secure full-time employment, become self-sufficient and was in a better place mentally. I felt like I was on steady ground for the first time in a long time. In the wake of COVID-19, my hours have been cut and I may lose my job. The stability I’ve worked so hard for is now in jeopardy. I am struggling with the basics and am now facing homelessness. I’ve applied for assistance, but the future looks very uncertain right now." #FacesofCOVID19 #StoryofRecovery

211 Director Kelly Brown and her son Kingston are both working from home, and although there are challenges, they’re enjoying the extra time they have to spend together. “My sons definitely have a more clear idea of what my work day entails, and I know better what their teacher’s days look like too!” #facesofcovid19 #storyofresponse
